“The likeness which art creates exists in our imagination only.”
E.H. Gombrich, 1960
“trompe-l’oeil – the art of deceiving the mind” is a visual exploration of perception & mind: Have you ever wondered why we see animals in the sky or faces in our food? How come that we recognize a 3D-object depicted in a minimized, abstract and 2D-drawing? What kind of patterns do manipulate our perception of space and movement? How is technology able to make us believe to be in another place than we actually are?
In order to invite spectators on a quest for answers the exhibition will lead through various levels of discovery: The beginning is contexualizing the psychological phenomena of Apophenia and more specifically, Pareidolia that build the foundation for an individual perception of the visible. Visitors will then have the opportunity to encounter specific forms of art such as Anamorphosis and Optical Illusion whose illusionary impacts function only thanks to the human imagination. The last step of the spectators’ path is an experience of the power of Virtual Reality, giving a taste of how artists will deceive our eyes and minds in the future, or better: how they already do.
The different sections are composed by deceptive installations, contemporary design objects, illusory artworks and multi-layered technology.
“trompe-l’oeil – the art of deceiving the mind” is a visual exploration of how art provokes, influences and manipulates the way we see and what we see:
But now, see for yourself.
